Tartrazine, also known as E102, is a synthetic pigment belonging to the functional group of azo-compounds (organic compounds that have nitrogen in their chemical structure), and which provides the lemon yellow color if used as a food coloring. Its most frequent use condiments or confectionery, and also in cosmetics and medicines.

In the United States and the United Kingdom, tartrazine is widely used in its yellow color, but is also used in combination with the dyes E133 (FCF Bright Blue) or E142 (S Green) to produce various shades of green. The use of tartrazine is banned in Norway, and has been banned in Austria and Germany before the European Community Directive Council 94/36 / EC repealed its ban.
